“Many of the defiled believe that the Unspoken One’s advent is at hand. I also believe it. I have probed the minds of many–far too many–and I am as convinced as them.”
Tilthan should have figured Uligon was closely involved with the Eye of Rab’di. How else would the man have known the details about the gem’s transfer?
“Is that who I think it is?” Nemral signed.
Nath nodded.
Uligon was crossing the audience chamber with another regal looking fellow. This second man looked younger than Uligon, but had a superior demeanor about him.
“…I have doubled the guard escort,” Uligon said, his voice echoing through the audience chamber. “What with the recent murders we cannot be too cautious, Sire Duarin.”
So, that’s the man who found it, Tilthan mused.
Guards parted for the two men as Uligon and Duarin continued to the display case holding the Eye of Rab’di.
“So, does that mean there will be twelve instead of six?” Nemral signed, referring to what Uligon had told them. They knew thirty guards were escorting the Eye from the audience chamber, but that would dwindle to six.
“Doesn’t matter,” Tilthan signed aloofly. “Even if there are twelve we can dispatch them quick.”
“…I appreciate your concern,” Sire Duarin said, his voice deep and regal. “But I doubt an incident will occur tonight. The City Watch has devised a theory, and that theory proves the palace safe.”
Uligon didn’t look convinced.
The two regal men stopped at the display case, inspecting it. Guards filed in around them, creating a partial ring that wrapped partway up the dais. They were all focused on the Eye of Rab’di, ignoring the storm brewing beyond the towering windows.
A flash of lightning lit the audience chamber as Tilthan began to sign to his fellow thieves, but he stopped upon noticing a dark spot on the floor-to-ceiling windows. With curiosity, Tilthan leaned forward, bracing himself against the balcony’s railing. His eyes widened as he saw a burly man climbing down the upper panes of the far window, glowing with a white aura. The man’s hands seemed to stick to the glass.
You again… Tilthan murmured. It seemed someone else wanted the Eye of Rab’di, too.
“By Dorin’s Scepter!” Nemral swore beneath his breath. “Th-tha-that’s….”
“How… is he climbing?” Nath muttered.
The burly man stopped short of the middle panes, placing one hand upon the glass below his waist. The man’s hand glowed with pale brown-gray light that soon shot through the rest of the pane. Tilthan could see a ripple move through the glass, changing it. None of the men in the audience chamber seemed to notice. Is he transmuting–
Suddenly, the burly man swung through the window, gracefully falling onto the dais. His veil of invisibility dissipated as he rose to his feet, and he stretched out his hand. Within a split second, a shaft of shimmering green light formed–a sword composed of pure magic.
“That’s Tefan!” Nemral croaked.
Tilthan started. Was this really the ghost of a dead man? No, Tilthan told himself, he’s using magic. He has to be a mage, a renegade mage.
